About Us

What: An extra-curricular reading program that focuses on getting students to read different types of literature, read for enjoyment, and identify themselves as readers.

Who: Any Nebraska school may enter teams in any or all of the three levels:

When: Students read throughout the summer and school year. Two events are hosted: Fun Day in March and a competition in April

Fun Day: Fun Day is geared toward getting the students to interact with each other and do fun things related to the literature. Any student who is actively participating in a Page One program, regardless of whether or not he or she is on a competition team, participates fully at the Fun Day. We have some really great things being planned for this coming 2012 Fun Day.

Competition: The annual Competition involves 4 different rounds.

The Individual Multiple Choice Round is administered 2 weeks before the competition to any actively participating student. There is no limit to how many students participate in this round. The top 10% or top 8 students from all participating schools will move onto the next level of individual competition.

The Individual Countdown Round involves the top 10% or the top 8 scorers from each level according to their performance on the Individual Multiple Choice Round. Competition begins with the pair of students with the lowest qualifying scores. The pair is asked a set of 5 oral questions. The student who answers the most of 5 moves on to face the next lowest scorer, until the final 2 participants remain. Rules change at this point. The final winner is the first student who answers 3 questions correctly. A 1st place winner and runner-up are recognized in each of the three levels.

The Team Written Round is administered by giving teams 5 rounds of 10 questions for a total of 50 questions. Teams have 5 minutes per set of 10 questions and provide their answers in written form. The top two teams from Written Round will go onto the The Team Countdown Round.

The Team Countdown Round is a fast-paced oral round pitting the 2 top teams against each other. A set of 15 questions is read orally. The team answering the most correct wins.

Catholic Literature Books: Each level features a handful of titles specifically chosen to give our children a better appreciation of their Catholic faith. Titles vary in style and content but each directly reflects Catholic beliefs and values. Participants who read all the titles in this category are recognized at the competition with a certificate and a medal. We highly encourage each and every participant to read these titles. We recommend beginning with these titles in the summer. Students who complete the Catholic Literature books will be entered in a raffle for Gloria Deo gift certificates.

To Register: Each school should collect a $5.00 fee per student. All the funds go to the Page One Committee account and are used to run the program. Please direct questions, comments, or ideas to Ann Kotopka, mkotopka@gmail.com or (402) 489-6860.
